Presto Magix! Return of the Jedi!!

Presto Magix was cool stuff for kids in the 70s and 80s.

One of the games I grabbed for the newly purchased XBox 360 was Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. I thought “cool, I get to play through both sets of trilogies, the sucky one and then the good one!” So I make it all the way to Episode VI, Return of the Jedi and allofasudden the jingle from this old commercial pops into my head…

I recall seeing this ad on TV several times around the release of Return of the Jedi in theaters back in 1983 and immediately begging mom for this. Mind you, it wasn’t a toy, but a set of rub-on transfers. Using these sticker-like transfers, you could recreate scenes from the movie and have tons of good wholesome fun!

Presto Magix had a variety of sets in their line-up, including Star Wars. Check out the video below showing a few others.

Those familiar with these playsets of the 80s might compare this to Colorforms’ Shrinky Dinks line, which did use stickers the same way, but the stickers were bought enlarged and had to be baked in the oven to shrink them down to size. Shrinky Dinks required parental supervision, unless you were one of those kids who could get away with using an oven on your own, and by god why would you want to?

Classick Material prefers Star Wars over Star Trek and enjoys messing around with ovens unsupervised. He also co-hosts the Cold Slither Podcast and is now certifiably Lin-sane in the membrane. No children were asked, coerced nor forced to use an oven unsupervised during the writing of this post.

I don’t even have to click that video, I know the exact jingle. Still have it in my head after all these years for something I probably only ever heard a handful of times.
I used the background from the Thundarr the Barbarian Presto Magix to make the banner for my blog.

  2. Sweet! Thanks for the comment, Dex! Love your blog, btw! Might have to update our blogroll!
